This is the most professionally managed birding experience that I could have in my 10 years of birding in India .. Shakti led a group of four energetic and participative birders and ensured that we could see almost all the endemics of Andaman and I have added 39 lifers to my total … a great team at Tribesmen who are competent , focused and second to none .. tour was evenly paced and was easy to adopt with . Looking forward to the next one with Shakti and we also interacted with his team member Pradeep who is a very knowledgeable bird guide in his own right ..thanks

Ethical Birding Without Playback – Saw All Endemic Targets

Awesome birding experience with Tribesmen- Shakti, Prodip sarder and Franklin in Andaman. When asked Shakti for birding without playback, he accepted my request. I never expected to see all the endemic birds. But he took extra efforts to show all the endemic birds and did help me to take nice photos too. Food and stay was excellent. Very punctual. Thank you very much for the rich experience of Andaman birding without playback. It will be in my memory always.

Excellence & Expertise – Best Birding Team in the Islands

Think birding in Andaman, think Tribesmen and Andaman Birding Tour. When it comes to excellence and expertise nobody does it better than Shakti Vel. Possibly the best team in the Islands and one of the best in the country, Tribesmen exhibits peerless spotting and tracking skills, top of the line in-field assistance and unparalleled hospitality. Professional to the core, the team was consistent in its effort and ensured we achieved all our intended endemic targets. In addition to a host of migratory and vagrant species. Next to none indeed.

130 Species & 50+ Lifers – Exceeded Expectations in the Andamans

Birding with Tribesman in the Andamans was a superb experience which exceeded my expectations. I was there from 30 Jan 25 to 4 Feb25 and we were fortunate to have Shakt Vel as our guide all through for about 12 sessions, including night birding. I particularly liked the professionalism with which the sessions were conducted- starting on time, good vehicles with excellent drivers( who themselves are quite accomplished spotters!) and accomplishing targets. We saw all the endemics, 95% of the resident birds and a good number of migratory birds- 130 species with over 50 lifers (for me)! I particularly want to thank Shakti for the tips on night photography and adjustments for light etc which he so generously gave during the trips, along with spotting the most amazing birds. A lifetime experience- shouldn’t miss it!

Cleaned Up On Endemics – Highly Recommended Birding Guide

Maybe it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Shakti’s name came so highly recommended to me as “the guy” for birding as a guide in the Andaman Islands, from a hard core international birding company.

Let’s just say I was not disappointed! Gentleman, nice person , and a very skilled birder, who knows the islands intimately. I won’t tell you just how fast we cleaned up on all of the endemics, even the tougher ones, along with most of the endemic subspecies.

If I did it would create unrealistic expectations. But suffice it to say that we had enough time to spare in my allotted time to twitch the “Andaman” Bush Warbler, what an adventure! Great memories, can’t speak highly enough about my time spent with him in his corner of the world!

108 Species & 18 Endemics in 3 Days – Exceptional South Andaman Birding

After a group tour to mainland India in the beginning of November 2019, my travel companion and I wanted to spend some days birding in South Andaman. Our hope was to see the endemic bird species the island has to offer. By pure luck we ended up with Shakti Vel of Tribesmen as our guide for 3 amazing days of birding. He also arranged everything else during our stay from airport pick-up, hotel stay at AT Villa in Flat Bay and transport back to the airport. The 3 days of guiding exceeded my expectations in every possible way. Shakti Vel has extensive knowledge of the bird species of South Andaman, where to find the birds and bird photography. He cares deeply about nature conservation. In addition he was professional, helpful and very nice. Birding for owls and nightjar was done after dark. Shakti Vel helped me with the settings on my camera. Thanks to that, I was able to take pictures of some of the birds we saw at night. My bird list after 3 days of guiding was 108 species. I saw 18 of the endemic species and heard the last 2 endemics. I highly recommend Shakti Vel of Tribesmen to everyone who want to experience excellent birding in South Andaman.

Andaman & Nicobar Birding FAQ
Expedition Planning

Andaman & Nicobar Birding FAQs

Key information for world listers, twitchers, and wildlife photographers.

How many endemic bird species can be seen in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands?
The archipelago holds 28+ recognized endemic species according to IOC taxonomy, along with over 100 endemic subspecies awaiting split evaluations. Top target species include the elusive Andaman Crake (Rallina canningi), Andaman Woodpecker (Dryocopus hodgei), Andaman Treepie (Dendrocitta bayleyi), Andaman Scops Owl (Otus balli), and the Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica).
What is the best season for birdwatching and photography in Andaman?
The primary expedition window runs from November through April during the dry northeast monsoon season. Peak months (December to March) provide optimal forest floor lighting, minimal rainfall, active vocal territorial displays, and maximum activity for both resident endemics and wintering migrants.
Are foreign nationals permitted to join birding expeditions to Great Nicobar?
Yes, designated zones in Great Nicobar are accessible to foreign nationals. Specific sectors require Protected Area Permits (PAP) and security clearances. Local tour operators handle all end-to-end permit documentation and forest department filings for both domestic and international birders.
How many days are needed to see all South Andaman endemic species?
A focused 4 to 5-day itinerary based around South Andaman hotspots (Chidiya Tapu, Mount Harriet National Park, Sippighat wetlands) yields a 95%+ success rate for all 20 South Andaman endemics. For full archipelago clean-ups including Little Andaman and Great Nicobar targets, an extended 8 to 10-day itinerary is recommended.
What camera gear and telephoto lenses are recommended for jungle photography?
Due to dense tropical rainforest canopy and low-light understory, a telephoto lens between 400mm and 600mm with fast apertures (f/4 or f/5.6) is ideal. High ISO-performing camera bodies, off-camera fill flash or flash extenders (Better Beamer), and moisture/humidity protection (silica gel bags, rain covers) are essential.
Do expeditions include night birding for endemic owls and nightjars?
Yes. Night birding is integral to every tour. Dedicated nocturnal sessions target all regional nocturnal endemics, including the Andaman Scops Owl (Otus balli), Hume's Boobook (Ninox obscura), Andaman Boobook (Ninox affinis), and Andaman Nightjar (Caprimulgus andamanicus).
