Birdwatching at Peninsular Malaysia

Day 1: Arrival and Birding at Ullu Langat Forest

Arrive at  Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Pick up and do some birding in Ulu Langat forest (1 hour, 90 km) on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. After that, we head to Bukit Tinggi to rest for the night. (45 mins, 35 km).

Day 2: Birding at Bukit Tinggi & Taman Negera

Post breakfast, a short drive to Bukit Tinggi feeding station (40 mins, 20 km) for Mountain Peacock Pheasant and lately, Ferruginous Partridge. Then spend some time birding the area for the hill species before we head out for lunch, followed by a 2.5-hour drive (215 km) to Taman Negara Sungai Relau for an afternoon’s birding. 

Day 3&4: Birdwatching at Taman Negera

Full day birding on Day 3 with lots of possibilities. A few feeding spots has several bulbuls and babblers coming in though the main draw would certainly be Garnet Pitta. Other possibilities: Malayan Banded Pitta, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Green, Black-and-Yellow, and Black-and-red Broadbills; Black, Rhinoceros, and Bushy-crested Hornbills; Red-naped, Diard’s, and Scarlet-rumped Trogons; multiple barbets, bulbuls, and babblers. Also an opportunity for night birding for Large Frogmouth.

next day morning in Taman Negara Sungai Relau before we head off to Fraser’s Hill (3 hours, 200 km). The rise in altitude brings a whole new set of species. We should have an afternoon here to wait for Malaysian Partridges that come to the feeding station.

Day 5&6: Birdwatching at Fraser Hills

Two full days here for the montane specialties. Chestnut-capped and Malayan Laughingthrushes, Malayan Whistling Thrush, Silver-eared Mesia, Red-headed Trogon, Mountain Fulvetta, Long-tailed Sibia, White-browed Shrike Babbler, Pygmy Cupwing, Sultan Tit, Black-browed and Fire-tufted Barbets and many more. 

Day 7 : Morning at Fraser Hill & Airport Drop

Final morning in Fraser’s Hill. Possible to bird at the Gap, lower in elevation and a different mix of species, most notably Bamboo Woodpecker, Black Laughingthrush and Pin-tailed Parrotfinch amongst the bamboo. After that it’s a 3 hr drive (180 km) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport for a drop off.
